This method is obsolete from 8.04 where you would use the repositories instead.

The following method utilizes Mediabuntu repository.

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

Make sure that Microphone is captured in the ALSA mixer settings.
